Version 0.3.4 released

Release 0.3.4 is out — digi sound on the plain ST, a compiler speed bump, and slightly better FMV encodes.

What's new?

  1. Digitized audio without STE DMA. The game now falls back to YM-2149 by default when DMA sound is not available. For a Covox Speech Thing, set Audio=Covox in CONQUER.INI. YM is CPU-intensive and not recommended for 8MHz hardware.
  2. Link-time optimization (LTO). About 7–13% faster than 0.3.3 depending on the machine (see Benchmark.md).
  3. Slightly nicer cutscenes (especially on transitions) if you re-encode in remix-web. Needs Effort Normal or Thorough; Fast (the default) doesn't use lookahead and looks as before. Gameplay MIX files are unchanged.

How to play?

Download the new release zip and drop CNC.TOS over your 0.3.3 game folder. Re-run remix-web only for the movie bump. Extract onto your (emulated or real) Atari ST hard drive and run CNC.TOS.

Don't hesitate to report any problems. Command & Conquer for Atari ST is a work in progress.

Thanks to everyone who tested, spread the word, or donated.

Have fun! — Jonas

Doing the math on these numbers reveals something interesting: Overall performance is better: for the quiet tests about 12%, for the audio-on tests about 7%. This discrepancy shows that likely the audio system has regressed a little. That's good news, because there's no real reason audio should be slower in the new version, I just added a new audio path for YM (and Covox) which should not be active on your ST.
